The Order of First Publication of
‘Series’ Short Stories
A number of members have asked if there is a
chronological list of the short stories of the main series so that they
can be read ‘in order’. The simple answer is ‘no’, and in some
cases the stories were published in a different order in the
UK from the US. What is possible, however, is to list with 99%
confidence the short stories in order of their first publication
anywhere. This does not mean, of course, that stories published later
may not precede in fictional date those of an earlier real date. One
classic example of this is the Ukridge series, which started with a
novel, Love Among the Chickens, in which Ukridge was married, and
then reverted to short stories in which his wife was never mentioned.
Another is Jeeves Takes Charge, when Jeeves starts his employment
with Bertie only after three earlier stories had been written.

The Jeeves and Wooster Stories
This listing is complicated by three factors. First,
many of the stories listed do not coincide with the chapter headings in
the books, particularly The Inimitable Jeeves. Secondly,
many of them were split into two chapters and thirdly, some of the
stories were rewritten after appearing in My Man Jeeves but
before reappearing in Carry on, Jeeves. We have indicated in
which book each story can be found, therefore, and where necessary, have
added its chapter number(s).
